BASILICA OF SANTA CROCE - TEMPLE OF ITALIAN GLORIES

A poet described The Basilica of Santa Croce (Holy Cross) as the Temple of the Italian glories. The magnificent Gothic Church is home to the mortal remains of Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Macchiavelli and many other celebrated people. In Santa Croce we can find works of art of many centuries: frescos by Giotto and his pupils, masterpieces by Donatello and Brunelleschi, paintings by Bronzino. You will be fascinated by the magnificence of this Church. Santa Croce has also been the stage for a scene of the film "A room with a view". The french author Stendhal when he visited the Basilica of Santa Croce was overcome with emotion. He wrote:
"I was in a sort of ecstasy, from the idea of being in Florence, close to the great men whose tombs I had seen. Absorbed in the contemplation of sublime beauty... I reached the point where one encounters celestial sensations... Everything spoke so vividly to my soul".

After the visit of the church we'll have a walking tour from Signoria Square to the Cathedral square where we can admire Brunelleschi's world famous dome.

The tour will last 3 hours
On Sunday the tour will be in the afternoon (in the morning the church is closed).
The Basilica closes at 5pm
